About Us

The Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies

The OCBS was established in 2004. It is a Recognised Independent Centre (RIC) of the University of Oxford. It promotes the academic study within the University of Buddhist texts, societies, theories and practices. It is committed to maintaining the highest academic standards.

The OCBS also aims to promote understanding of the importance of Buddhist insights across a wide range of academic disciplines; and to work in partnership with leading institutions to apply approaches derived from studying Buddhism to contemporary issues.

What OCBS Does

  • Supports the establishment of posts in Buddhist Studies (Professorships, Lecturerships, and Visitorships)
  • It works with Oxford University’s Oriental Institute, through its Buddhist Studies Unit,  to develop courses and other academic activities.
  • Holds conferences and lecture series, and sponsors guest lectures
  • Provides a flourishing environment for academic activity in its centre in Wolfson College, Oxford
  • Publishes the OCBS Monograph Series and the Journal of the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies
